Resistin, visfatin, leptin and omentin are differently related to hormonal and metabolic parameters in growth hormone-deficient children
2016
PURPOSE: The effect of growth hormone (GH) on adipose tissue and the role of adipokines in modulating metabolism are documented, but with discordant data. Our aim was to evaluate the impact of GH treatment on a series of selected adipokines known to have a metabolic role and poorly investigated in this setting. METHODS: This is a prospective study. Thirty-one prepubertal children (25 M, 6 F; aged 8.5 ± 1.6 years) with isolated GH deficiency treated with GH for at least 12 months and 30 matched controls were evaluated. Auxological and metabolic parameters, insulin sensitivity indexes, leptin, soluble leptin receptor, adiponectin, visfatin, resistin, omentin, adipocyte fatty acid-binding prot…
Vitamin D across growth hormone (GH) disorders: From GH deficiency to GH excess
2017
The interplay between vitamin D and the growth hormone (GH)/insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-I system is very complex and to date it is not fully understood. GH directly regulates renal 1 alpha-hydroxylase activity, although the action of GH in modulating vitamin D metabolism may also be IGF-I mediated. On the other hand, vitamin D increases circulating IGF-I and the vitamin D deficiency should be normalized before measurement of IGF-I concentrations to obtain reliable and unbiased IGF-I values. Indeed, linear growth after treatment of nutritional vitamin D deficiency seems to be mediated through activation of the GH/IGF-I axis and it suggests an important role of vitamin D as a link betwee…
Treatment results of acromegaly as analyzed by different criteria.
1997
Results of treatment of acromegaly are often incomparable due to the different criteria which have been used for defining cure or control of disease. At the present time it is widely accepted, that the main criteria of cure must be normalization of IGF-1 and a GH in the OGTT2 ng/ml. In this retrospective study we investigated the endocrinological results of 56 patients, who were surgically treated because of a GH-producing pituitary adenoma, by different criteria. Twelve of our patients had had additional medical treatment after surgery, two received radiotherapy. At a mean follow-up of 34 months after surgery 66% of patients had a basal GH5 ng/ml, 64% had a GH in the OGTT2 ng/ml and 73% ha…
Acute hormonal responses to heavy resistance exercise in younger and older men
1998
The purpose of this investigation was to examine the acute responses of several hormones [total and free testosterone (TT and FT, respectively), adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), cortisol (C), growth hormone (GH), and insulin (INS)] to a single bout of heavy resistance exercise (HRE). Eight younger [30-year (30y) group] and nine older [62-year (62y) group] men matched for general physical characteristics and activity levels performed four sets of ten repetitions maximum (RM) squats with 90 s rest between sets. Blood samples were obtained from each subject via an indwelling cannula with a saline lock pre-exercise, immediately post-exercise (IP), and 5, 15 and 30 min post-exercise. Levels o…
Clinical and metabolic effects of first-line treatment with somatostatin analogues or surgery in acromegaly: a retrospective and comparative study.
2012
To evaluate the metabolic effects of first-line somatostatin analogues or surgery in acromegaly. Retrospective, comparative, 12-month follow-up. Two hundred and thirty one patients (123 men, age 47.32 ± 14.63 years) with active acromegaly, first line treatments were somatostatin analogues in 151 (65.4%) and surgery in 80 (34.6%). Metabolic syndrome (MS) parameters, glucose, insulin and GH during oral glucose tolerance test, stimulated insulin sensitivity by insulin sensitivity index (ISI Matsuda), early and total insulin-secretion rate by insulinogenic index and AUC(INS), visceral adiposity function, expressed by visceral adipose index (VAI). Somatostatin analogues treatment improved all MS…
GH responses to two consecutive bouts of neuromuscular electrical stimulation in healthy adults.
2008
BackgroundIt is well established that repeated GHRH administration or repeated voluntary exercise bouts are associated with a complete blunting of GH responsiveness when the administration of the second stimulus follows the first one after a 2-h interval.AimTo evaluate GH responses to neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) in healthy adults.MethodsSix volunteers (mean age±s.d. 31.7±5.5 years) were studied before and after two consecutive bouts of NMES exercise (a series of 20 contractions at the maximum of individual tolerance, frequency: 75 Hz, pulse duration: 400 μs, on–off ratio: 6.25–20 s) administered at a 2-h interval.ResultsBaseline GH levels (mean: 0.3±0.2 ng/ml) significantly …
Growth hormone replacement in adults:Real-world data from two large studies in US and Europe
2020
Objective: This report describes the effectiveness and safety of growth hormone replacement in 3180 adult patients with growth hormone deficiency followed-up for 0.0–12.2 years in two completed, complementary, non-interventional, multicentre studies, NordiNet® International Outcome Study (IOS) (NCT00960128) and the American Norditropin® Studies: Web-Enabled Research (ANSWER) Program (NCT01009905). Design: In both studies, Norditropin® (somatropin; Novo Nordisk A/S, Denmark) was administered at the discretion of the treating physician and according to routine practice. We present data on baseline characteristics, growth hormone dose, safety data and change from baseline in waist circumferenc…
Hormonal stress responses of growth hormone and insulin-like growth factor-I in highly resistance trained women and men
2021
Abstract The purpose of this study was to examine the responses of growth hormone (GH) and insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF I) to intense heavy resistance exercise in highly trained men and women to determine what sex-dependent responses may exist. Subjects were highly resistance trained men (N = 8, Mean ± SD; age, yrs., 21 ± 1, height, cm, 175.3 ± 6.7, body mass, kg, 87.0 ± 18.5, % body fat, 15.2 ± 5.4, squat X body mass, 2.1 ± 0.4; and women (N = 7; Mean ± SD, age, yrs. 24 ± 5, height, cm 164.6 ± 6.7, body mass, kg 76.4 ± 8.8, % body fat, 26.9 ± 5.3, squat X body mass, 1.7 ± 0.6). An acute resistance exercise test protocol (ARET) consisted of 6 sets of 10 repetitions at 80% of the 1 RM w…
A follow-up of GH-dependent biomarkers during a 6-month period of the sporting season of male and female athletes
2006
In order to verify the effects of the sporting season (entailing periods of training, competition, recovery, resting) on GH-dependent parameters in male and female athletes from different sporting disciplines, 47 male and female athletes (3 rowers, 5 swimmers, 7 alpine skiers, 3 soccer players, 7 middle distance runners, 14 sprinters, 4 triathletes, 1 road walker, 3 cyclists) were followed-up for a period of 6 months. Blood samples were taken every two months for the evaluation of IGF-I, N-terminal propeptide of type III procollagen (PIIINP) and C-terminal cross-linked telopeptide of type I collagen (ICTP). Abnormal IGF-I, PIIINP and ICTP levels were observed during the follow-up period in …
Basal concentrations and acute responses of serum hormones andstrength development during heavy resistance training in middle-aged andelderly men and…
2000
Effects of 6 months of heavy resistance training combined with explosive exercises on both basal concentrations and acute responses of total and free testosterone, growth hormone (GH), dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS), cortisol and sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), as well as voluntary neural activation and maximal strength of knee extensors were examined in 10 middle-aged men (M40; 42 +/- 2 years), 11 middle-aged women (W40; 39 +/- 3 years), 11 elderly men (M70; 72 +/- 3 years), and in 10 elderly women (W70; 67 +/- 3 years). The maximal integrated electromyographic (iEMG) and 1 repetition maximum (RM) knee-extension values remained unaltered in all g…
